Weight gain is something that the majority of us are familiar with. It happens when we slack off on our diets, start eating unhealthy food and fail to exercise as much as we should. (That combination is why weight gain is so common during the holiday season!) But eating too much and not exercising aren't the only causes of weight gain. There are actually a whole lot of different things that can contribute to weight gain, some of which are more common than others.
If you have been wondering why you've experienced weight gain or you are interested in knowing more about why weight gain happens then you might want to take a look at the following ten relatively common causes of weight gain:
1. Hypothyroidism. You've probably heard of people who are overweight joke that could have a thyroid problem. While someone who says that it is probably not a coincidence really suffered from this problem, is one of the main reasons why people gain weight even when they do everything they can to keep pounds. This thyroid disease decreases the body's metabolism which means that people who have this disease often gain weight, even if at the same time experience a lack of appetite. Eat less, but still gain weight as fat retention and water. This is something that requires the help of a doctor and this is something that should be checked if you think you might be a cause of your weight gain.
2. Cushing's syndrome. This is another disease that can cause a person to gain weight, even when he or she is trying to lose weight and to take all appropriate measures to do it naturally. This disease is characterized by an increase in the hormone cortisol in the body. This hormone causes weight gain in very specific regions of the body (face, upper back and stomach areas are most affected by Cushing's syndrome), while other parts of the body to maintain a healthy weight normal. It is a very frustrating weight gain and something that should be addressed through the assistance of a doctor.
3. Other diseases including those that affect certain organs. Hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome are two of the most common medical conditions that can lead to weight gain. But are not the only medical people can gain weight. There are a variety of different diseases which can cause weight gain, whether in the form of additional fat in the body or in the form of water retention. Diseases that affect the liver, kidney or heart disease are commonly associated with weight gain caused by fluid retention. Surprisingly there are at least 300 different medical conditions that can cause weight gain!
4. Tumors in the body. A final medical that you are experiencing weight gain is that you can have a tumor somewhere in the body that is causing the weight gain. There are two main types of tumors that cause weight gain. The first is a stomach tumor. If large enough, can cause the body to obtain a significant amount of weight. The second is a tumor of the pituitary gland that regulates hormones in the body, inadequate regulation that occurs as a result of a tumor can cause weight gain.
5. Emotional difficulties. Although the physical reasons are often what makes a weight gain experienced people, it is also very common for weight gain to occur as a direct result of emotional difficulties that someone may be in progress. The main way this happens is that someone is going through a difficult time emotionally (just go through a period of depression) and choose to eat unhealthy ways to cope with the emotions that ultimately leads to weight gain. However, other emotional problems such as anxiety and stress can lead to hormonal changes in the body which, when combined with poor eating habits can lead to weight gain.
6. Use of certain prescription drugs. Most of the medications you take to help you cope with some health problems can have the side effect of causing weight gain. This used to be a very common problem that women using the pill, although progress in this field of medicine has become less of a problem. Many other drugs, unfortunately, still has this side effect. If you are experiencing weight gain, which otherwise can not be explained, then you may want to ask whether the medications you are taking could be the cause.
7. Allergies to certain foods. A large percentage of people suffering from food allergies they do not know the fact that the impact of these allergies is smaller and harder to detect. Some of these people have food allergies that cause a reaction in the body which leads to weight gain. In addition to the weight gain is mainly in the form of conservation, the person who has this problem can be seen that the stomach is enlarged due to the gas caused by an allergy.
8. Improper balance of blood sugar in the body. The average person will experience ups and downs in the amount of blood sugar in your body throughout the day due to the fact they eat different foods at different times (some of which are rich in sugar). However, there are some people whose bodies are not really able to manage this situation and have trouble regulating blood sugar imbalance in the body. These people may experience changes in appetite and weight gain due to the problem.
9. Inadequate intake of essential fatty acids. Some people still think they should avoid certain types of fats in the diet in order to be able to lose weight. However, this is not the case at all. There are some "good fats" - essential fatty acids - we have enough in our bodies if we want to maintain a normal weight. A sudden drop in essential fatty acids or a general deficiency in them can cause weight gain. Often, people who do not have these fatty acids feel like the "bad fats" and worsen the problem.
10. Trying to gain weight. For those who are struggling to lose weight, the idea that people are just trying to gain weight on purpose seems almost incredible. However, we all have different problems with our bodies and different goals for our appearance. In fact, there are people who are actually trying to gain weight.
